Ordinary Joes + Robyn Wallis-Johnson
+ Gloria Monday

Last year Tom Chester performed a solo set for us, he is a superb musician and it’s always a delight to hear him. He also appeared last autumn as a one man backing orchestra for nel when she charmed us with her beautiful voice and very personal original songs.

So it’s great to welcome him back in a duo with Dave Westbrook, it will be a masterclass.

We met Robyn Wallis-Johnson at the Brampton Sessions Christmas Hootenanny last year and loved the power and character of her performance, She’s a true original and a great singer so it’s excellent to be able to showcase her talent at the Grand Ol’ Bowling Club

Plus your resident Orchestra of Truth, Gloria Monday. All proceeds as usual will go to Rethink Mental Illness

Julia Waldron + Charlie Osguthorpe
+ Gloria Monday

Julia really needs no introduction if you’ve been paying attention to music in Sheffield over the years, she is a wonderfully powerful, soulful singer who writes great songs with a good dollop of both feminism and humour.

She performs as one half of ‘Daisy Daisy’ with the bass player and jazz singer, Nicola Farnham and is the leader of the Orchestrators band performing classic folk roots and Americana. She is also one of the guiding hands of Under the Stars, the project that gets adults with learning disabilities and autism involved with the performing arts. Our fundraiser is a rare chance to see Julia playing solo.

Charlie Osguthorpe is an old friend, he writes very pointful songs with a strong social and political thread but mainly great lyrics performed with a voice of great power and character. He usually leads Mary’s Hammer but this is a chance to hear him solo so maybe we’ll see a more personal side of Charlie.

Glass Ships
+ Paul Chisnell & Richard Freeman
+ Gloria Monday

Last year Glass Ships helped us out by performing at short notice when we had a change of plan. We had not seen them before but we were blown away by their musical partnership, Great vocals and really excellent playing on guitar & harp, we were so please that of course we’ve asked them back.

Paul Chisnell is a very old friend and a brilliant singer, we’ve shared many stages with him, particularly when he was a member of Ar Faoued, but he also popped up at the Bowling Club a year ago, invited to sing with Treebeard. He has a new partnership with guitarist Richard Freeman and when we heard them playing a collection of classic jazz era songs with great guitar accompaniment. we had to invite them to the Grand Ol’ Bowling Club of course.

Gloria Monday + Nel + Ade Hall

It’s the big night for Gloria Monday, when we are top of our own bill. We are hoping it will also be the launch of our first actual recorded mini-album/EP thing.
For the past two years we have become increasingly noisy and original, it’s been a great refreshment of our shared musical career after ten years of being Break a Leg which was lovely but a bit more sedate.
So we’ll have pointful songs, good time songs and a few old favourite pop songs and we hope you’ll join in.

Plus we’ve invited two special friends to play for you, people whose music we admire and who are just great to be with. Self-effacing Ade Hall, who we’ve been sharing stages with for longer than we can remember and writes terrific songs with strong local roots, and Nel, who is a beautiful singer with great warmth and generosity and one of our new best friends.

Treebeard + Gloria Monday

It’s the end of the year, winter is on us and we need to have a party. So of course we have Sheffield’s most popular folk rock ensemble. Expect lots of dressing up, silliness and terrific music, they are a lot of fun but their playing is always sensationally good.

Treebeard’s very genial presiding genius, Chris MacMahon has been with us for longer than most can remember, he’s directly descended from Gandalf, leads ever-popular progressive rock band, Haze, as well as Treebeard, has a very impressive collection of hats and a tail he won in a bet with a lizard. His band lineups have changed over the years but many people feel that the current Treebeard is the best ever.

Plus your resident Orchestra of Truth, Gloria Monday of course. Karen & Chris have been playing together for 11 years but they continue to explore new ideas and invent new songs

On the Back Porch + Mike Richards
+ Gloria Monday

Two lovely people who are long time supporters and contributors at these events. Bob Delbridge and Issy Howie sum up what’s great about old time American music with beautiful harmonies, a warm presence and deep understanding of their art.

Issy was also a member of the Outlaw Sisters, who played for us a while back and were acclaimed for their wonderful three part harmonies. Bob is hailed as the reincarnation of Hank Williams in his role as frontman of Britain’s leading Honkytonk band, The Bapchilds

Mike Richards is another old friend who has done a huge amount to support and encourage live music in Sheffield, plus being a really great interpreter of songs. For a long time he was part of the greatly loved Americana group, Dogwood Rose, but it’s always a treat to hear him stepping out on his own account.

Plus your resident Orchestra of Truth, Gloria Monday of course. Karen & Chris have been playing together for 11 years but they continue to explore new ideas and invent new songs
